John Neumeier's Illusions - Like Swan Lake features a phycological reinterpretation of Swan Lake. He swaps the story of Prince Siegfried, Odette, and Odile for Ludwig II of Bavaria.

Graeme Murphy's 2002 Production of Swan Lake, featured at The Australian Ballet changes the story from fairy tale, too nonfiction. The Ballet is transformed into a drama Inspired by the royal love triangle between Princess Diana, Charles III, and Queen Camilla.

Fredrik Rydman's 2011 Swan Lake Reloaded is a hip-hop and contemporary dance piece that explores real world issues, and deals way less with the fairytale world.

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (The Trocks) is an all-male comedy ballet troupe that parodies the Little Swans variation.

In 2015 outside the Bolshoi Theatre, a 3D light-show version of Swan Lake was projected on the Theatre. It was presented during Moscow's Cycle of Light festival.

Angelin Preljocaj's Swan Lake, premiered in 2020, is another contemporary reinterpretation of Swan Lake that also highlights issues within the modern day such as environmental description and corporate greed.

Dada Masilo's 2010 version of Swan Lake uses contemporary dance as well as African dance styles. While Masilo keeps the original themes of the story, she also showcases ideas of discrimination, identity, and Taboo surrounding love.

Return to The Handmaid's Tale

Gauthier Dance // Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart premiered a 2021 production titled Swan Lakes featuring three different reimagining of Swan Lake each 20 minutes long. The Four works include Le Chant du Cygne: Le Lac, By Marie Chouinard; Swan Cake, by Hofesh Shechter; Untitled for 7 Dancers, by Cayetano Soto; and Shara Nur, by Marco Goecke.

Cina Espejord's A Tale About Swan Lake is a family-friendly version of Swan Lake that also features Norwegian folklore. It premiered in 2024 at the Norwegian National Ballet.

TUTU, by Chicos Mambo contains a comedic, parodied version of Swan Lake featuring a Hip Hop version of "Dance of the Cygnets" with six male dances in duck costumes.
